Georgian, Russian religious leaders may meet in Baku
Russian news agencies are reporting that the Russian Patriarch Kirill will meet the Patriarch of All Georgia, Ilia II in Baku today. The religious leaders of the two countries are visting Azerbaijan`s capital to participate in celebrations of the 60th birthday of head of the Muslims of the Caucasus sheikh-ul-Islam Allakhshukyur Pasha-zade.
The representative of the Moscow Patriarchate has said the meeting will be `extremely important`, as relations between secular authorities of the two countries disrupted after the armed conflict in 2008.
`Relations between Russia and Georgia are very strained today, while relations between the Churches shall always develop evenly, constructively and fruitfully. I believe it is today important as never for the Churches to add peacekeeping and reconciliatory spirit to the relations between the peoples of Russia and Georgia,` Foreign relations chief of the Moscow Patriarchate Archbishop Ilarion has said.
Patriarch Kirill, who together with Pasha-zade co-chairs the Inter-religious Council of the CIS, will also meet Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
