Vice-Mayor of Tbilisi Responds to Request of United Opposition Regarding a Street Protest
Tbilisi City Hall has allowed the oppositional coalition to hold a street protest on January 13. However, City hall also warned that buildings of state institutions must not be blocked. Also, the circulation of municipal transport must not be impeded.
The Emergency Medical Service must be mobilized and anti-constitutional as well as remarks against current authorities and its violent overthrow would not be tolerated. Reportedly, on 8 January 2008 the application signed by Zviad Dzidziguri, one of the leaders of the Georgian Conservative Party and Salome Zourabichvili, the leader of the Sakartvelos Gza (Georgia's Way), was submitted to the mayor's office; in the application it was mentioned that the rally would be launched at 12 pm January 13 and it would last until 10 pm January 18.
According to the approval issued by City Hall, protesters will not be allowed to come nearer than 20 meters to government facilities. Violation of this provision will result in revocation of the approval. Members of the opposition coalition Salome Zourabichvili and Zviad Dzidziguri stated that they would be responsible in the event of any violations which might occur. They also said about 100 thousand people would presumably participate in the scheduled protest.
