Georgia accuses Russia of blackmailing int. society
Georgian side has assessed the behavior of the Russian delegation at the fifth round of the Geneva Georgia-Russia talks as a `Russian blackmail and the tendency of dangerous development`. Giga Bokeria, who represented Georgia in these talks hailed the fact that the dialogue took place, however, `the fact that Russia tries to use these discussions for blackmailing international society, is unacceptable,` Bokeria said.
The fifth round of the talks waas held yesterday. The sides did not reach serious agreements on basic issues. Reportedly, the issues, which have been agreed, are of technical character.
Georgian side proposed the international organizations and the sides involved in the conflict to send international police forces to the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which have been occupied by Russia after the August war 2008. The United States delegation supported the idea, but it irked Russian delegates. Gregory Karasin, who headed the delegation said that Georgia tried to force the international organizations accept their idea of international police control and that Russia would never approve this.
Another issue discussed at the negotiations was the presence of UN and OSCE missions to Georgia. The sides have failed to agree on this either. Russia reiterated that Russia would vote for the extension of both missions only in case the organizations send separate missions to Georgia and the two breakaway regions.
The next round of Georgia-Russia talks will be held on July 1 in Geneva.
